Sacrificial anodes corrode in place of the outboard's aluminum. Suzuki's owner's manuals say to inspect the external anodes at 20 hours and every 100 hours, replace an anode once two-thirds of it has corroded away, never paint them, and clean them with a wire brush so they keep working. The internal powerhead anodes are inspected by the dealer every 100 hours.

Anode material follows the water: standard Suzuki anodes are for saltwater and brackish use; magnesium anodes are the choice for freshwater, where standard anodes barely corrode and give little protection.
