Sacrificial anodes corrode in place of the more critical metal components on your outboard, a deliberate trade where a relatively cheap zinc (or aluminum or magnesium, depending on water type) anode wears away first, protecting the gearcase, trim tabs, and other submerged metal parts from galvanic corrosion. Once an anode is more than half consumed, it's no longer providing reliable protection and should be replaced.
