The thermostat is one of the most critical, and most overlooked, components in your Suzuki outboard's cooling system. A properly functioning thermostat regulates engine temperature by controlling coolant flow, allowing the engine to reach optimal operating temperature quickly and maintain it consistently. A failed thermostat can cause catastrophic overheating in as little as a few minutes of operation.
Suzuki Marine recommends replacing the thermostat every 2-3 seasons as a preventive maintenance item, not just when symptoms appear. A thermostat that sticks closed causes overheating; one that sticks open causes the engine to run too cold, increasing fuel consumption, accelerating engine wear, and potentially fouling spark plugs.
