Choosing the Right Pitch

Pitch is the most important propeller specification. Selecting the correct pitch ensures your engine reaches its recommended wide-open throttle (WOT) RPM range, which for DF9.9/DF15/DF20 engines is 5,000–6,000 RPM.

Scenario

Recommended Action

Engine over-revs above 6,000 RPM at WOT

Increase pitch by 1" to 2"

Engine under-revs below 5,000 RPM at WOT

Decrease pitch by 1" to 2"

Heavy boat or frequent passengers/gear

Start with lower pitch (9"-11")

Light hull, solo rider, speed priority

Start with higher pitch (13"-15")

Shallow water / weed-heavy environment

Consider smaller diameter / lower pitch

For most DF9.9/DF15/DF20 owners; fishing aluminum boats, inflatables, tender use; the OEM aluminum prop is the correct and most cost-effective choice. Stainless makes sense if you are pushing performance limits or in prop-strike-free deep water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read a propeller size? (e.g., 9.9" x 13")

Propeller size is written as Diameter x Pitch. Diameter is the circle swept by the blades. Pitch is the theoretical forward travel per revolution. A 9.9" x 13" prop has a 9.9-inch blade circle and advances 13 inches per rotation in solid material.

What pitch should I use on a DF15A with a 14-foot aluminum boat?

Most 14-foot aluminum fishing boats with a DF15A are well-served by an 11" pitch prop. If the boat is heavier (fishing gear, trolling motor, live well), try 9". If lightly loaded and you want more speed, try 13". Always verify by checking WOT RPM in the 5,000-6,000 range.

Are Suzuki propellers interchangeable between DF9.9 and DF15?

Yes. The DF9.9, DF15, and DF20 share the same gear case diameter and spline specification. Propellers designed for one model are compatible across all three engines.

What is included with the propeller purchase?

The propeller blade assembly is included. The hardware kit (thrust washer, nut, cotter pin) is sold separately. If you are replacing a damaged prop, you can often reuse your existing hardware.
