When a Suzuki power trim and tilt (PTT) stops working, Suzuki's own troubleshooting tables point to a short list first: the PTT fuse, battery voltage and connections, a manual release valve that is not fully closed, and the PTT fluid level. Those four are owner checks; the relay, switch, harness, pump and tilt cylinder are meter work, and the tables say “replace” for most of them.

To move a stuck motor by hand, use the manual release screw: turn it counterclockwise (two turns on most families, four turns on the DF40A/50A/60A), move the motor by hand, then retighten the screw. When you tilt the motor manually, ensure that your grip and footing are secure and that you are able to support the weight of the engine. Tilt-pin portables are covered in the portable tilt and shallow-water guide.

The four checks before you call anyone

Battery and connections. The low battery voltage caution (DF100A–140A, DF250AP/300AP, DF300B/350A manuals) tells you to refrain from using the PTT while it is active, and that a marginal battery may have enough power to start your engine yet still trip the caution when accessory use places a high current demand on it. Check the battery against the battery requirements chart and the terminals and cables against the wiring guide.

The PTT fuse. Every Suzuki PTT table starts with a blown fuse. On the DF70A/80A/90A/100B the service manual names three fuses in that row, main 40 A, PTT switch 10 A and ECM 30 A, because the ECM controls the PTT relay. Ratings are in the table below where a manual prints one; the full fuse box is on the Suzuki fuse chart. Replace it with the same type and rating and find the root cause; if a new fuse blows in a short time after installation, you may have a major electrical system problem.

Manual release valve fully closed. A release valve left open or leaking appears in four of the six rows of Suzuki's table: “ensure that valve is fully closed.” Torque where printed: 1.7 N·m (0.17 kgf-m, 1.2 lbf-ft) on DF9.9B/15A/20A power-tilt models; 3.5 N·m (0.36 kgf-m, 2.6 lbf-ft) on DF70A/80A/90A/100B (one page prints 3.6 N·m). Do not over tighten it.

Fluid level. Low fluid is the first cause listed when the PTT motor runs but nothing moves, or runs fast and squeals. The check and bleed are below.

Manual release screw and PTT fuse by family

Family (manual) Manual release screw PTT switch fuse (where printed)
DF9.9BT/BTH, DF15ATH, DF20AT/ATH (2019) Two turns None printed; main 30 A, ECM 10 A
DF25AT/ATH, DF30AT/ATH (2018) Two turns None printed; main 30 A, ECM 10 A
DF40A/50A/50AV/60A/60AV (2022) Four turns 15 A
DF75/DF90A (2023) Two turns (service manual: at most three full turns) 10 A
DF100A/115A/115AS/140A (2016) Two turns 15 A
DF115B/115BS/140B (2023) Two turns Not in the manual text we have
DF150A/175A/200A (2020) Two turns Not in the manual text we have
DF150AP/175AP/200AP (2020) Two turns 10 A
DF225/DF250 (2021) Two turns None printed; main 60 A, sub 30 A
DF250AP/DF300AP (2021) Two turns 10 A
DF300B/350A (2023) Two turns 10 A

On most models the PTT switch works with the key off: the manuals warn it can be accidentally activated when the ignition key is off, resulting in injury. On the drive-by-wire DF250AP/300AP and DF300B/350A the tilt switches cannot be activated when the power is off, so a dead remote switch with the power off is not a fault.

Symptom by symptom

From Suzuki's service-manual PTT tables (the DF70A/80A/90A/100B and DF9.9B/15A/20A power tilt print the same causes). “Owner” is what you can check without a meter.

Symptom Causes in Suzuki's table Owner Dealer
Nothing happens, no sound Blown fuse for PTT system; defective PTT switch; open circuit between main fuse and PTT relay; defective PTT relay or circuit; PTT motor or pump Battery, terminals, fuses; try both switches if fitted Relay, switch, harness, ECM, PTT motor
Up works but not down, or the reverse Defective PTT switch or relay; open light blue (up) or pink (down) lead wire circuit Fuse, switch Relay and wiring
Motor runs but nothing moves Low PTT fluid level; manual release valve leaking; debris in system; broken drive joint in PTT pump; broken pump; tilt piston leaking Close the release valve; check fluid and bleed Pump; a leaking tilt piston means a new PTT unit assembly
Will not hold, creeps down overnight Manual release valve leaking; tilt piston leaking; debris in system Release valve fully closed PTT unit assembly if the piston leaks
Runs fast or squeals, no movement Low PTT fluid level; manual release valve leaking; broken drive joint in PTT pump Fluid, bleed, release valve Pump drive joint
Slow or weak Not a separate row in Suzuki's tables Battery voltage, fluid, bleed PTT motor inspection
Quits after repeated use, then comes back Overheat protection circuit (owner's manual) Let it cool None if it recovers
Stops short of full up, or hits the motor well Tilt upper limit setting (owner's manual) Reset the limit, below Trim down limit

PTT fluid: type, level check and bleeding

The recommended fluid is 99000-22810 (PTT Fluid, 1 liter) or Dexron III automatic transmission fluid; to ensure consistent pump operation, never mix different types of PTT fluid. The owner's manuals print no fluid check; this is the service manual's (DF9.9B/15A/20A power tilt and DF70A/80A/90A/100B).

  1. Raise the engine to a full-tilt up position and engage the tilt lock lever. If someone activates the switch while you are moving the lever, your hand could be injured.
  2. Remove the filler plug. If fluid can be seen at filler plug level, the reservoir is full; if not, top up with the same fluid that is in it.
  3. To bleed air, with the release valve closed, operate the PTT switch, raising and lowering the motor (full tilt position to full trim down position) 4 to 5 times, then recheck the level.

It quits after repeated use

The DF40A–60A, DF75/90A, DF115B/140B and DF300B/350A manuals print the same note: repeated operation of the PTT causes the overheating of the PTT motor and the protection circuit may stop the operation of the motor. While it is activated the PTT switch is inoperative, cancelled once the overheating is resolved. No duty-cycle time is printed; let it cool. Also: retract the trim rams completely when mooring (DF115BS/140B: keep pressing DOWN until the trim rods are completely retracted), and never use the tilt lock lever to hold the motor tilted when trailering; use a transom saver bar.

Motor stops short of full tilt: the tilt upper limit

The DF50AV/60A/60AV, DF75/90A, DF100A/115A/140A, DF115B/140B and DF300BMD/350AMD have an electronic tilt upper limit; the DF300B/350A use a mechanical tilt limiter cam instead. If the motor contacts the motor well during full tilt up, reset the limit: cancel the current setting first, and do not start the engine.

Cancel: ignition key or Keyless Start System ON; pull out the emergency stop switch lock plate; remote control handle in NEUTRAL; using the throttle only function, move the warm-up lever upward (side mount) or the control handle forward (top mount) until the caution buzzer sounds one time; press the UP side of the PTT switch for three seconds, and two short beeps confirm it is canceled; close the throttle. Set: press UP to the optimum full tilt up position for the boat; repeat the throttle-only step until one beep; press UP three times within three seconds, and one short beep confirms it is accepted; close the throttle, install the lock plate, then cycle full up and full down to check both limits. The limit will not prevent the motor from contacting the motor well if the lower unit hits an object at high speed. The trim down limit (DF40A–DF350A) is factory set and reset only once the ECM has been replaced or the trim sensor removed and reinstalled, using the DOWN side; that is dealer work.

Trim sensor and the trim gauge

On the DF70A/80A/90A/100B, diagnostic code 3–7 is the trim sensor, set when the ECM is receiving an out of range 0.2–4.8 V signal; there is no engine fail-safe, and control continues with a fixed sensor output of 3.5 V (see the Suzuki diagnostic codes page). The maintenance manual adds: if the trim down limit position is not set, the trim gauge will not operate (through 2016 models). With Auto Trim (DF115B/140B, DF250AP/300AP, DF300B/350A), the PTT switch takes priority, and Auto Trim engages again when the engine speed is reduced to 1500 r/min or below or the motor is set in the full trim down position, so a motor that moves by itself coming off plane is the function re-engaging.

What the dealer checks

The service manuals test the PTT relay off the motor: coil resistance 16–24 Ω between the UP or DN coil terminal and ground on the DF9.9B/15A/20A and the DF70A inspection page (the DF60 service manual prints 25–37 Ω at 20 °C), then continuity with 12 V applied, and the switch for continuity. For Suzuki Precision Control (drive-by-wire) models, Suzuki Motor of America issues a dealer PTT troubleshooting worksheet. It starts with a visual check for aftermarket parts such as a bow-mounted PTT switch and for damaged or corroded connectors, tests the PTT relay before any other component, then the PTT switches at the engine and the control lever, circuit voltages, the trim sensor output at the ECM (approximately 1.1 V at full trim down, 4.1 V at full tilt up; out of specification, the harnesses are checked for open and short circuits, then the sensor replaced) and continuity of the remote harness between the boat control module and the engine. None of it is an owner procedure. Removing the PTT unit needs the engine firmly secured and its weight fully supported by a hoist. Under warranty? Check with your dealer before opening anything beyond the fuse box and the fluid plug.
