Converting a Suzuki DF9.9B, DF15A or DF20A from Tiller to Remote Control: What the Kit Includes and What the Job Involves

Suzuki DF9.9B remote-control outboard beside the title Tiller to Remote Conversion

Suzuki's Remote Control Parts Set, part number 67130-89L23, converts a tiller-steered DF9.9B, DF15A or DF20A (serial number 440001 and up) to remote control. It supplies the engine-side throttle and shift linkage, brackets, wiring harness and mounting hardware: 38 Suzuki part numbers, 63 pieces. It does not include the remote control box, the throttle and shift cables, or the steering system (helm and steering cable), so budget for those separately. The kit ships with Suzuki's own instruction sheet; this page is an overview drawn from Suzuki's set-up and service manuals, not a substitute for that sheet.

Be honest about the job before you order. The set-up manual for these models says it "is intended for those who have enough knowledge and skills to service SUZUKI outboard motors." You will be removing the tiller handle, fitting linkage under the cowling, rewiring the engine and setting cables to Suzuki's clearances. If that is outside what you are set up for, have a Suzuki dealer do it; if the motor is under warranty, check with your dealer first.

Which motors the kit fits

The 67130-89L23 kit fits DF9.9B, DF9.9BT and DF9.9BTH, DF15A and DF15ATH, DF20A, DF20AT and DF20ATH from serial number 440001 and up. Check the model code and serial number on the ID plate before ordering. In Suzuki's model codes, T means power tilt with remote control on these three motors, TH means power tilt with a tiller, E means electric start, and S or L is the shaft length. The set-up manual quoted below (99505-89L10-01E, March 2013) applies from serial 410001; the service manual's 440001-and-later supplement covers the newest motors. Below 440001 the kit listing does not claim to fit; ask before you buy. Not sure which motor you have? See our DF9.9B vs DF15A vs DF20A guide; a factory remote motor such as the DF20ATL5 may beat converting.

What is in the 67130-89L23 kit

The two connectors 67467-89J01 are the "cable connector" the set-up manual lists as the engine-side part for remote-control models; the throttle and shift cables thread into them. The 10A and 30A fuses match the manual's remote-control wiring diagram (see the fuse chart).

What is not in the kit, and how to pick the extras

Remote control box

For factory remote-control motors the set-up manual lists two box-and-harness pairs. R model (manual tilt): remote control box 67200-94J15 and remote control harness 36620-94J01. T model (power tilt): remote control box 67200-93J06 and remote control harness 36620-93J02. Both wiring-diagram parts tables also list a white tachometer, 34200-93J31. The owner's manual shows what the box gives you: remote control handle, warm-up lever, throttle tension adjuster, lock-out lever, ignition key and emergency stop switch, plus the power tilt switch on DF9.9BT/20AT.

Two things to confirm when you order. First, the kit lists wiring harness assembly 36610-89LH1, while the set-up manual pairs each box with a 36620-series remote control harness; ask whether that harness comes with the box. Second, the box has an ignition key and the manual's remote-control wiring diagrams show an ignition switch, starter relay and battery, but the kit has no starter motor, battery or cables, and the manuals we have do not cover adding electric start to a recoil-start (non-E) motor; ask your dealer. Boxes are in remote controls and binnacles and mechanical controls.

Throttle and shift cables

The set-up manual's required-parts list gives one control cable part number per length, quantity two: "Choose one item which is matched to the boat in length."

Length Part number
8 ft (2.4 m) 67320-93J00
10 ft (3.1 m) 67320-93J10
12 ft (3.7 m) 67320-93J20
14 ft (4.2 m) 67320-93J30
16 ft (4.8 m) 67320-93J40
18 ft (5.4 m) 67320-93J50
20 ft (6.0 m) 67320-93J60
22 ft (6.7 m) 67320-93J70
24 ft (7.3 m) 67320-93J80

We sell these as a 2-pack or a single cable; measure first using our post on how to measure control cables. The manual warns: "If the cable connector is not threaded far enough onto the cable, the cable connector could break causing a loss of control and a crash. Thread the cable connector at least 8 mm (0.3 in.) onto cable."

Steering

The set-up manual's steering section covers one system: mechanical push-pull, single cable, starboard entry into the motor tilt tube, with a steering cable meeting the current American Boat and Yacht Council safety standard (P-17). "Be sure to follow the steering system manufacturer's instructions for proper selection and installation." The Suzuki part that joins the cable to the motor is the drag link assembly 67701-99J01: drag link (not available separately), spacer 67721-89J00, bolt 67725-99J00, two safety nuts 67726-99E00, three washers 67728-99E00 and steering cable seal 41161-94400. The kit's list does not show it; ask when you order. Steering parts are in steering brackets and hardware and controls and steering parts.

What the job involves

The order of work, with the manual's own steps where they matter. The complete procedure is the kit's instruction sheet plus the "REMOTE CONTROL BOX SET-UP INSTRUCTION" supplied with each box.

1. Confirm the model code and serial number

From the ID plate, before anything comes apart.

2. Remove the tiller handle

Remove the tiller handle assembly following the Suzuki service manual procedure. The service manual gives the fasteners: tiller handle bolt and tiller handle bracket bolt both 23 N·m (2.3 kgf-m, 16.5 lbf-ft), the bracket bolt pre-coated with thread lock (Suzuki Thread Lock 1342; the 410001-and-later supplement lists 1342H). It prints no conversion procedure, so the kit's sheet is the procedure. Tiller parts, if you ever convert back, are in tiller handles and kits.

3. Fit the brackets, linkage and harness

Install the steering bracket attachment, throttle lever bracket and linkage from the kit, then route and connect the wiring harness. On T models, read the sub-battery notice below first.

4. Connect the throttle and shift cables at the engine

The set-up manual's engine-side procedure assumes the cables are already installed in the box per the "REMOTE CONTROL BOX SET-UP INSTRUCTION". Then, in this order:

  1. Remove the starboard engine side cover and put the remote control handle in NEUTRAL.
  2. Shift cable first. Remove the lock pin and washer from the clutch control lever, route the cable and seat its groove in the slot on the cable holder. With the lever in neutral, thread the connector onto the cable until its hole aligns with the pivot pin, fit it flat side toward the lever, then washer, lock pin and lock nut. Check that "both forward and reverse gear can be engaged with the same angle of remote control handle travel from 'NEUTRAL' position"; the manual's figure shows 32° each way.
  3. Throttle cable second, handle in NEUTRAL. Seat the cable in the holder, check that the throttle drum is fully closed, and turn the throttle control lever counterclockwise until clearance "a" exists: 1 to 2 mm. Thread the connector on, center its hole on the pivot pin, fit it flat side toward the lever, then washer, lock pin and lock nut. At full throttle the throttle stopper must touch its stopper; if not, adjust the connector again. Back in neutral, the drum must be fully closed with the 1 to 2 mm clearance between the interlink lever and the link lever. "Do not attempt to adjust the throttle valve opening such as by turning the throttle stop screw G."
  4. Fit the grommet and side covers after confirming "that the remote control harness and PTT motor cable are properly routed and they must not contact with the remote control cable holder"; if the harness touches, pull it outward at its grommet.
  5. Connect the remote control wire harness coupler to the engine-side coupler, then "make sure that the cables are not stretched or otherwise stressed when the outboard motor is turned all the way to the right and left."

5. Connect the steering cable with the drag link

Thread the steering cable seal onto the port end of the tilt tube, grease the cable with Suzuki Water Resistant Grease, insert it from the starboard side and tighten the retaining nut to the cable manufacturer's torque. The manual notes that on most installations the cable goes in before the motor; our mounting guide covers re-mounting.

Drag link step Torque (set-up manual)
Safety nut D at the steering cable end 10 N·m (1.0 kgf-m, 7.0 lb-ft), "then BACK THE NUT OFF 1/8 TURN"
Bolt C, drag link to the attachment (with spacer B and washer E) 34 N·m (3.4 kgf-m, 24.5 lb-ft)
Safety nut D, final tightening 34 N·m (3.4 kgf-m, 24.5 lb-ft)

"Never reuse the lock nut D after it has been threaded into position and torqued." Afterward, check for smooth and free steering by turning the wheel all the way right and left (more fastener figures in the torque spec chart).

6. Mount the box and test

Mount the remote control box at the helm and connect the cables per the Suzuki installation guide, then test throttle, shift and neutral before running the boat.

Wiring and battery notes

On power-tilt (T) motors the set-up manual prints this notice, repeated here verbatim: "NOTICE On the T model; Do not connect the sub-battery cable to the remote control harness. For this model, it is not necessary to connect the sub-battery cable to provide power for operation of the engine control system. If you connect the sub-battery cable, the sub-battery fuse will blow."

Battery: "Suzuki recommends a 12-volt cranking-type lead acid battery for the DF9.9B/15A/20A." The minimum for starting is 450 Marine Cranking Amps (MCA)/ABYC, or 330 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)/SAE, or 70 Reserve Capacity (RC) minutes/SAE, or 12 V 35 AH; boat loads call for more. Dual-purpose batteries are fine if they meet those minimums; do not use a deep cycle battery as the main cranking battery; the 2013 set-up manual says maintenance-free, sealed or gel-cell batteries are not recommended because they may not be compatible with Suzuki's charging system. An extended battery cable must be larger than AWG8; connect positive first, then negative, with hexagon nuts. More in the battery requirements chart and the battery cable and wiring guide.

First start: the emergency stop switch is now on the control box, and the owner's manual says the starter motor can crank with the lock plate out of position but the engine cannot start. Cranking for more than 5 seconds can damage the starter system; if it does not start, wait 10 seconds and try again.

After the conversion

No break-in is needed after a conversion (the engine has not changed), but there is a new maintenance line. The service manual's remote control inspection reads: "Initially after 20 hours (1 month) and every 100 hours (6 months). Inspect the shift, throttle, and steering to ensure they operate smoothly and reliably." The chart column for the same row is headed every 100 hours or 12 months; both are as Suzuki printed them.
