How to Change Oil on a Honda BF Outboard

1. Warm up the engine for 5 minutes; warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants.

2. Tilt the motor to vertical and place a drain pan under the lower unit.

3. Remove the engine oil drain plug using a 17 mm socket and allow oil to drain completely.

4. Remove the old oil filter using a filter wrench. Lightly oil the new filter gasket before installing.

5. Reinstall the drain plug with the new copper washer included in the kit. Torque to 18 ft-lbs.

6. Add 2 quarts of Honda 10W-30 through the fill port. Check level with dipstick.

7. Remove the lower unit fill and drain plugs. Drain old gear oil completely.

8. Insert the gear oil tube in the lower drain port and fill upward until oil flows from the upper port.

9. Reinstall upper plug first, then lower plug, using the new gaskets from the kit.

10. Start the engine and check for leaks. Log the service date and hours for your next interval.
