Four-stroke outboards need a marine-rated oil: NMMA FC-W certified 4-stroke oil carries the corrosion inhibitors and shear stability that automotive oil does not. Suzuki specifies SAE 10W-40 (ECSTAR V7000); Honda specifies its own 10W-30 marine oil for most BF models; Yamaha specifies Yamalube 4M. Lower units take SAE 90 hypoid gear oil rated API GL-5, or the brand's own gear oil.
