Enhancing Fuel Efficiency For Your Outboard Motor

Most outboard motors are the most fuel-efficient when used at 60-80% of the engine's maximum capacity

Focus on maintaining your engine regularly, using the right propeller, and keeping your boat lightweight as well as avoiding idling excessively. ( Use a moderate speed)

A clogged fuel filter is another mainly common culprit ( you will notice the difference when you throttle down as well as try to draw more gas from the tank)

Key objectives to improve outboard engine fuel efficiency

  • Regular Maintenance-Performing routine tune-ups and checking for engine issues that could affect anything
  • Correctly choosing the propeller (right size and pitch for your boat/engine combination)
  • Monitor fuel consumption ( keep track of your fuel usage to identify areas where you optimize your boating habits)
  • Reduce weight on board (Remove unnecessary items from your boat to minimize the load on board)
  • Avoid excess idling

Use the propeller that best suits your boat and style of boating. Propeller size and pitch can have a great effect on fuel efficiency. Too much pitch can overload the motor. Too little can result in over-revving as well as engine damage. Suzuki offers a wide selection of propellers to meet anyone’s specific needs.

You can check our inventory of propellers, and if you have any questions you can contact us at 561-562-6441 so we can assist you with making the best choice for you.

Use the highest quality gasoline and oil available. Low-octane, stale, or contaminated fuel simply doesn’t burn as efficiently as fresh, high-grade gasoline. The same holds for oil, as cheap, low-quality oils can foul spark plugs and create deposits. Keep your engine tuned up and well maintained Periodically replace the spark plugs, fuel filters, and other components that affect fuel efficiency, we recommend using a Suzuki Fuel Conditioner & Water Remover, to help clean out all the build-up on your fuel line.  Always remember to use Suzuki oil to ensure quality. You can check out our Oil Change Kits, Maintenance Kits, and Lower Unit Gear Oil Kits that can accommodate all your engine needs: (Small tip: When purchasing gas for your outboard, DO NOT go with Rec-87, choose REC-90 and thank me later!)
