Suzuki Outboard Propeller Chart: Prop Sizes, Pitch Options and Prop Nut Torque by Model

Suzuki genuine propeller beside the title Outboard Propeller Chart

Boat Max Online Service Team |

This page lists the propeller sizes Suzuki prints for each outboard family, the full-throttle rpm range each model must reach, and the propeller nut torque and hardware order for fitting one. Sizes are copied from Suzuki's set-up and service manuals as printed: blades × diameter × pitch, in inches. The rule for choosing between them is Suzuki's: select a propeller that lets the engine reach the recommended operating range at full throttle with the maximum boat load. How to test that with a tachometer, and how to move pitch up or down, is on our full-throttle RPM range and propeller guide.

How to read the chart

  • 3 × 10 1/4 × 11 means three blades, 10 1/4 in diameter, 11 in pitch. Pitch is the number that changes rpm: the owner's manuals say smaller loads generally require larger-pitch propellers and larger loads smaller-pitch propellers.
  • Right-hand vs left-hand: standard lower units turn a right-hand (R) propeller. From the DF100A/DF115A/DF140A up, the set-up manuals also list left-hand (L) propellers for counter-rotation lower units; the letter follows the size on the prop. Install a right-hand propeller with a regular-rotation lower unit, or a left-hand propeller with a counter-rotation lower unit, never the other way.
  • DF300B/DF350A run two contra-rotating propellers, front and rear, marked F or R at the end of the size code (example from the manual: 3X15-1/2X25.5F).
  • Where a chart lists more than one model, the manual does not always say which sizes belong to which model; we note that where it applies. A prop with either too much or too little pitch gives an incorrect maximum engine speed and can severely damage the motor.

Propeller nut torque by family

Owners get the owner's-manual figure. Where the set-up or service manual prints a single value instead of a range, it is noted; do not average them. The hardware order is what goes on the shaft after the propeller, in the manual's order.

Fitting a propeller the manual's way

  1. Shift into Neutral and remove the emergency stop switch lock plate so the motor cannot be started accidentally.
  2. Wear gloves, and lock the propeller by placing a block of wood between the blades and the anti-cavitation plate before loosening or tightening the nut.
  3. Coat the propeller shaft splines liberally with Suzuki water resistant grease to help prevent corrosion.
  4. Place the stopper on the shaft, align the propeller with the splines and slide it on, then the spacer (where fitted) and washer.
  5. Tighten the propeller nut with a torque wrench to the figure for your family.
  6. Align the grooves in the nut with the hole in the shaft, insert the cotter pin and bend the ends over to lock it. Removal is the reverse.

The service manuals have the propeller, nut and cotter pin inspected initially after 20 hours (1 month) and every 100 hours (12 months): a bent or worn propeller, worn or damaged bush splines, and a slipping rubber bush all call for repair or replacement. Our torque spec chart has the rest of the fasteners.

Counter-rotation propellers

On the DF150AP/175AP/200AP and DF250AP/300AP the lower unit can be used for either regular or counter rotation without being changed: the motor ships as regular rotation, and rotation is set by a rotation select connector, a blue connector labeled REGULAR or a white one labeled COUNTER. Right-hand propellers are identified with the letter R after the size on the propeller. Fit the propeller that matches the rotation, as above. On the other families a counter-rotation lower unit is a separate model; check your model code before ordering a left-hand prop.

Dual propellers on the DF300B and DF350A

The front propeller nut is a left-hand thread and needs the Suzuki "Propeller nut remover & installer" (special tool 09923-29810 in the set-up manual); it is secured by bending the front propeller nut stopper, not a cotter pin. The owner's manual sequence:

  1. Grease the splines; place the front propeller stopper on the shaft and slide on the front propeller.
  2. Place the front propeller nut spacer and the front propeller nut stopper on the shaft, aligning section A of the stopper with the punch mark C on the spacer (the set-up manual describes this as the stopper's circular tab sitting in the groove with the circle mark).
  3. Tighten the front nut (left-hand thread) to 125–135 N·m (13–14 kgf-m / 92–100 lbf-ft) with the tool, then bend two sections of the stopper's locking edge to the nut. Do not bend sections A and B.
  4. Place the rear propeller stopper, slide on the rear propeller, then the rear nut spacer and washer.
  5. Tighten the rear nut to 50–60 N·m (5.1–6.1 kgf-m / 37–44 lbf-ft), align the nut grooves with the shaft hole, fit the cotter pin and bend it.

To remove, straighten the locking edges on the front nut stopper before turning the front nut. Confirm the size of both propellers when installing: front and rear must be the same number of blades, diameter and pitch.
